Cool Runnings – an outing for all

Last weekend we headed over to Cool Runnings to celebrate the twin’s 12th Birthday.

Now their Birthday was at the end of August but the weather was so crappy then (remember that really cold spell we had at the end of August) so we decided to put off their Birthday outing until the weather was able to accept the invitation and join us which was last weekend.

Cool Runnings?

Cool Runnings is an outdoor, downhill toboggan track 1,25 km long and is the only toboggan track in Africa! The concept is similar to ice bobsledding but with no ice, these sleds run rather on wheels on a stainless steel track. Each toboggan seats up to 2 people but you have the option of going on your own as long as you are over 1.3m in height and are over the age of 8. Kiddies age 3-7 must be accompanied by an adult.

The ride starts with an automated lift system pulling you to the top. From there the sled is released and you go whizzing down the track while taking in the beautiful scenery. We went in September and it was just stunning with all the flowers in bloom. Your speed can be controlled and easily adapted to your preference with the brake lever, so go at your own pace. Adrenaline junkies can go up to 40km/ph while the not so keen can slow it down.

Cool Runnings is situated just outside Cape Town, on the slopes of Tygervalley. Directions here.

Food and facilities:

The Park has a large, covered terrace area offering food and drink facilities as well as a bar. Spectators and riders can take a break and watch the riders while having a drink or something to eat.

We didn’t have anything to eat so I can’t comment on the quality of the food but they do offer a variety of snacks, chips and ice creams.

Cost:

A single ride is R45 pp (age 3 – 14) and R55 pp (age 15+) however there are various combos on offer.

We chose the family combo option which gets you 18 tokens to share. This equates to R25 per ride and was the cheapest option.
